Circular Livelihoods

Transforming Waste into Opportunity

Burning of textile and agricultural waste is a big issue in rural Indonesia - causing severe pollution, respiratory problems and contributing to climate change. Together with you, we keep developing new ways to transform this waste into livelihoods for women in our villages.

The Problem

In Indonesia, agricultural waste is usually burned rather than composted, causing respiratory issues and contributing to climate change.

At the same time, textile waste is becoming an ever bigger issue. According to the Ellen McArthur Foundation, every second 1 garbage truck full of clothes is dumped somewhere. Less than 1% is recycled.

Yet there is significant opportunity in this waste - both to reduce environmental impacts and create new livelihoods for women in rural Indonesia.

The Solution

Upcycling Waste:

Part of our Waste to Livelihoods program is the upcycling of waste fabrics and offcuts into new products. Championed by our seamstresses in Tegal Kertha Village, we have kept more than 4 tons of textile waste out of landfills. And we’re only getting started.

Recycling Waste into Threads

But there is more: Together with our weaving community in Medono Village, Central Java, we’re developing ways to upcycle waste textiles and even agricultural waste like banana stems into new threads.

Threads that are circular, biodegradable and can be woven into new products by our artisans.

Seamstresses in Tegal Kertha Village, Bali, upcycle offcuts and other textile waste into new products.

Let’s Turn Waste into Livelihoods

So far, our upcycling programs have given incomes to 20 women and saved +20tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. But with your help, we can do so much more.
